The saga began when Podolyak, speaking in an interview, shared his views on whether India and China possess the ability to understand the consequences of their actions. He said, “China and India lack the ability to foresee the consequences of their actions, which is unfortunate.” These words quickly gained traction, sparking strong reactions across various social media platforms.
A Russian media outlet reacted humorously, saying, “Indian Twitter is about to go ablaze!” However, it was China that took a more formal approach, with the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs requesting clarification and an explanation from Ukraine. The ministry’s official spokesperson remarked, “We are not aware of the basis for this statement. He should provide clarification and explain himself.”
Podolyak didn’t stop there. He further elaborated on his perspective, stating, “Yes, they invest in science. India even sent a lander to the Moon. But that doesn’t mean this country fully comprehends the modern world. The problem with these countries, India and China, is their failure to analyze the consequences of their actions.”
This isn’t the first time Ukrainian officials have found themselves in hot water regarding India. In April of this year, Ukraine authorities faced backlash after a social media post from the Defense of Ukraine’s Twitter account depicted the Hindu goddess Kali in a way that resembled Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pose.
Despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, India has maintained a diplomatic stance, refraining from imposing sanctions or condemning Russia’s actions. During the recent Group of 20 Summit (G20), India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the New Delhi G20 Leaders Declaration, which received unanimous approval. The declaration did not directly mention Russia as the aggressor but instead referred to the “war in Ukraine.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed a diplomatic victory, praising the G20 summit for avoiding direct criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In contrast, the Ukrainian foreign ministry criticized the joint declaration for not mentioning Russia and deemed it “nothing to be proud of.”
Throughout the ongoing conflict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized India’s commitment to a clear, transparent, and consistent stance on the Ukraine war.
